TIMBER SUPPLY
With the ever increasing interest in timber framed buildings,
there is a demand for green oak that cannot be satisfied by
the UK forestry industry. There have been years of under investment
in UK hard woods. To compound problems there is also a skills
shortage. Unless timber framers, architects and self builders
specify UK timber where at all possible, there will be continued
deterioration in our hardwood forests.
The import of European oak provides for quality and quantity.
But this cannot be a sustainable or environmentally responsible
way to work for the future of our hard wood forests.
We therefore try to buy English oak whenever possible. This
is available from sawmills who buy standing timber from local
estates. We also buy from individual sawyers using mobile saws
to convert single wind blown trees and small groups of trees
that would otherwise not be commercially viable to retrieve
and transport to a large sawmill.
