WORKING DRAWINGS - We will usually prepare working drawings using plans passed for planning permission. From these we can extract critical dimensions to determine the scale and detail of a new frame for client approval. The same drawings can also be submitted for engineer's certification.

CLADDING - Most timber frames are clad with oak weather boarding. Douglas fir can also be used and we normally use a minimum width of 225mm for a more traditional look. Boarding can either be fixed vertically or horizontally.

DIRECT GLAZING - This glazing system has been designed to cope with movement in the timber frame as it begins to dry. Direct glazing invloves the use of high specification glazing units and can only be installed by a few qualified specilaists. Direct glazing allows for the full visibility of structural timbers in the timber frame and simplifies the appearance of door and window openings.

INSULATION can have an impact on the design of timber frames. Rigid insulation used in warm roof designs results in a build up of the roof section, impacting on eaves details. We use a specification that still provides for a traditional eaves appearance.

  Useful Information

TIMBER FINISH - Green oak is mostly converted in the mill from tree to beam with a band saw leaving unsightly marks. We prefer to leave a hand finish which exposes the true colour of the timber and the beautiful figuring in the wood, as well as removing stains and marks associated with the tannin in the fresh wood and handling. We would advise against sand blasting to remove marks and stains, which has the effect of homogenising the timber.
